Glen Whiting

April 20, 1933 — July 9, 2013

Glenn Whiting, 80 of Vining died Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Glenn Vernon Whiting was born on April 20, 1933 in Clitherall, Minnesota the son of Alan and Hazel (Mittling) Whiting. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and graduated from the Evansville High School in 1951. He served with the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1953. After returning from the service he farmed with his father.

Glenn and Helen Jenstad were married on June 5, 1965 in Brandon, Minnesota. He managed the Brandon Liquor Store for eight years. In 1970, Glenn and Helen purchased a building in Vining where they started the Vining Palace also known as the Purple Palace, still currently operating for almost forty-three years. Glenn was very active in Vining, belonged to the Vining Fire Department for thirty-seven years, was one of the founders of the Vining Rescue Squad, a member of the Vining Watermelon Committee, had served as the Vining Mayor different times and was currently a Vining Council Member. He helped start and was a member of the West Central Liquor Beverage Association and also belonged to the Minnesota Liquor Beverage Association. Glenn enjoyed working on his lawn and gardening, going to casinos, horse races and scratch off lottery tickets. Glenn and Helen enjoyed their family and especially the grandchildren.

He is survived by Helen, his wife of forty-eight years; three daughters, Christine Whiting of Waite Park, Lynda (Ron) Rubink of St. Joseph and Terri (Pat) Zerwas of Brainerd; six grandchildren, Fernando Hernandez, Devin (Mandy) Rubink, Cassandra Hernandez, P.J. (Joleen) Zerwas, Travis Zerwas and Kelsey Rubink; two great-granddaughters, Lucy and Eleanor Rubink; four sisters, Hope (Roy) Helms of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mae Garvin and Patty (Gerald) Fearing both of Alexandria and Sharon (John) Whiting of Minneapolis; and by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Alan and Hazel Whiting; daughter, Patricia Hernandez; brother-in-law, Alfred Garvin and nephew, Billy Garvin.

Funeral Service: 11 am Saturday, July 13, 2013 at the Vining Lutheran Church in Vining

Visitation: (two hours prior) 9 am to 11 am at the church on Saturday

Clergy: Rev. Carl Andersen and Rev. Dawna Hochstein

Interment: Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, Minnesota
