Alan Leverne Malingen was born near Lawndale, Wilkin County, MN on December 7, 1926, the son of Melvin and Ella (Olson) Malingen. He attended school and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1944. Following graduation, Alan worked with his father on the family farm and was drafted into the United States Army in March of 1945. Alan served during World War II, and was honorably discharged in November of 1946, returning to the family farm. Along with his father, Alan also trucked and hauled gravel.

On June 16, 1950, Alan married Ramona Olson at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Barnesville, Minnesota, and they were blessed with five children.

Alan worked for the Lawndale Elevator, J.H. Fish Lumber Company in Barnesville, eventually moving to Norwegian Grove Township, OtterTail County, where he farmed until 1987. They spent a year in Colorado, before returning to Pelican Rapids, where they lived until moving into a new home Alan constructed in 1999.

He was involved in the Breckenridge camp of Gideon's International and was a founding member of Barnesville Lutheran Brethren, serving in various positions.
