Alma Hemquist Carlson, 96 formerly of Fargo and Battle Lake, MN passed away October 22, 2012 at her care home in Harlingen, Texas.
Alma was born on October 19, 1916 near Oakes, North Dakota and was born one out of eleven children to Conrad and Juliana (Huhnstock) Hofsommer. She attended Oakes schools through high school graduation. Later she worked in Oakes and Minneapolis. Alma and Arnold Hemquist were married May 25, 1940 in St. Paul, Minnesota. To this union three children, Julie, Janet and Michael were born.
Alma and Arnie worked together in establishing and operating a number of successful business ventures; home construction and excavating in Fargo; and later in 1959, building and operating Balmoral Golf Course near Otter Tail Lake, Minnesota.
Alma was a wonderful wife and a great mother to her kids and dogs. She was always a diligent worker, but found a new hobby in playing golf. Alma and Arnie enjoyed many happy winters at their home in Mission, Texas before Arnie's death in 1990. In December of 1998, Alma and Carl Carlson were married at McAllen, Texas. Carl died in September of 2002.
She is survived by her daughters, Julie Christensen of Harlingen and Janet Anderson of Perham; son Michael and daughter-in-law, Pamela (Moe) Hemquist of Battle Lake; by six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Don Hofsommer of Fargo; sister, Janice Johnson of Breckenridge; and by numerous nieces, nephews and her beloved poodle, Nellie. Alma was preceded in death by her husbands, Arnie and Carl; son-in-law, Bob Anderson; parents and eight of her brothers and sisters.
Memorials preferred to Harlingen Hospice, Harlingen Humane Society or Loaves and Fishes.
Memorial Service: 1:30 pm, Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the Battle Lake Community Center
