Alvin Dyke

Alvin Thomas Van Dyke, 84, of Fergus Falls, died peacefully on September 12, 2012, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.

Alvin was born on August 3rd, 1928, in St. Bernard, Nebraska, the youngest son of eleven children to Thomas and Elizabeth (Eckholt) Van Dyke.

Alvin was baptized at St. Bernard Catholic Church near Lindsay, Nebraska and confirmed at Holy Family Catholic Church also in Lindsay Nebraska. Alvin grew up in rural Nebraska and graduated from St. Francis High School in Humphrey, Nebraska, in 1946.

On January 20, 1948, Alvin married JoAnn Heinen, his high school sweetheart, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey, Nebraska. Alvin and JoAnn were married for sixty-four years and the two were blessed with eight children. Five sons: Terry, David, Kevin, Keith, and Paul. Three daughters: Bonnie, Patricia, and Mary.

Alvin co-owned and operated a gas station along with share-cropping on area farms in Humphrey, Nebraska before moving to Underwood, Minnesota, in 1960. Alvin ran a wonderful, family farm southeast of Underwood on Long Lake. The family farm was a source of many fond memories for Alvin's family. Alvin sold the farm in 1979, moving to a hobby farm in rural Dalton. Alvin also was a life insurance agent for Northwestern and other insurance companies. Alvin retired in 1998 and spent time repairing bicycles at his Battle lake home and enjoying his family.

Alvin was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Fergus Falls, MN. and Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake, MN. Alvin was a strong supporter of the NFO, member of the Eagles Club and the Knights of Columbus. Alvin was a member of the Underwood School Board and also served as Chairman.

Alvin was a loving husband and father who devoted his life to his family. He was an honest man who loved God. Alvin will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters: Agatha, Sister Evelyn, Nora and seven brothers: Leo, Carl, Solanus, Joseph, Vernon, Norbert, and Harold.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn of Fergus Falls, MN; eight children: Terry (Gwen) Van Dyke of Frazee, MN, Bonnie (Brad) Johnson of Rochester, MN, Patricia Van Dyke of Sutherland, NE, Mary Van Dyke of Fergus Falls, MN, David (Jean) Van Dyke of Minneapolis, MN, Kevin (Sandy) Van Dyke of Moorhead, MN, Keith (Heidi) Van Dyke of New York Mills, MN, Paul (Amy) Van Dyke of Carver, MN; sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Memorial Service: 1 PM Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Battle Lake, with visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Burial: Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Cemetery of Battle Lake.

Funeral Home: Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Battle Lake.
