Ardell Bergstrom, 83, of Alexandria, formerly Ashby, died Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Bethany Homes in Alexandria.
She was born May 21, 1928 in Garfield, MN to William and Josephine (Bettermann) Ziegelmann. She was baptized on June 10, 1928 and confirmed on May 24, 1942 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Garfield. She grew up and received her education in Garfield. Ardell worked at the Garfield Creamery wrapping butter. She moved with her family to Alexandria in 1946 where she was employed at Jim's Taxi Inn as a waitress. It was here that she met her future husband, Wallace Bergstrom. She and Wallace were married March 16, 1947 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria by Rev. A.C. Seltz. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Ashby where they farmed for 38 years and raised their five children. After retiring from farming, they moved to Ashby and lived there for 21 years. Wallace passed away on August 19, 1986. Ardell has lived in Alexandria at Winona Shores for the past five years.
Ardell was active in the church, a member of the Ashby Legion Auxiliary, and active with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program where she received a certificate of commendation for her dedication and outstanding volunteer work. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, playing cards, growing flowers, gardening, playing bingo, baking and volunteer work.
She is survived by her five children: Mildred Schroeder of Osakis, LeRoy Bergstrom of Maple Plain, Darlene (Jim) Lunemann of Osakis, Cheryl (Merl) Farber of Lowry and Evelyn Anderson (Robert Parrish) of Blaine; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Elva (Ruben) Kuehne of Long Prairie and LuAnn (Bud) Swanson of Richfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Elaine Van Vickle, a brother, Arthur Ziegelmann and two sons-in-law: Rodney Henderson and Roger Schroeder.
