Bennie Bengtson, 95 of Battle Lake, Minnesota passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
Bennie Clifford Bengtson was born on February 26, 1919 near Battle Lake, Minnesota to Nels and Jennie (Johnson) Bengtson. He was baptized and confirmed at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church. He attended the Rural School District No. 34.
On February 2, 1942, Bennie entered the U.S. Army serving in the 24th Division, 21st Regimen in the Pacific Theater. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and was awarded two Bronze Stars (New Guinea and South Philippines) along with the Philippine Liberation Ribbon during World War II. Bennie was Honorably Discharged on September 25, 1945.
In 1946, Bennie started working for his brother, Herbert, at Bengtson Oil Co. He later purchased the business and operated it for 36 years until his retirement in 1981.
Bennie was united in marriage to Helen Breden on June 10, 1953 in Park Rapids, Minnesota. They settled in Battle Lake, Minnesota where they raised three children.
Bennie enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and his 3 o'clock Shoreline coffee group. He was known for his quick wit and playing pranks on his children and grandchildren.
Bennie was a lifetime member of the Eagle Lake Lutheran Church and 68 year member of the Battle Lake American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; three children, Deonne (Jerry) Fabeck of Duluth, Brian (Cindy) Bengtson of Grand Rapids and Cheryl (Jim) Smith of Grand Forks, ND; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Jacob) Hairrell, Ryan (Trista) Smith, Nicholas (Disa) Fabeck, Chad and Morgan Smith, Tyler and Dillon Bengtson; two great-grandchildren, Bennett and Thomas Hairrell and Baby Smith on the way; sister, Lilly Williams of New Ulm; brother, Carl (Delores) Bengtson of Long Prairie; and by numerous relatives and friends. Bennie was preceded in death by five brothers, William, Herbert, Nels, John and Roy Bengtson; and by two sisters, Helen Mueller and Edith Lundby.
In lieu of flowers family prefers memorials to the Eagle Lake Scholarship Fund.
Funeral Service: 11 am, Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the Eagle Lake Lutheran Church of rural Battle Lake
Visitation: Wednesday from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
