Bernice Merten, 98, of Battle Lake, died Tuesday, August 02, 2011 at Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.
Bernice Doreen Merten was born February 11, 1913 in Schuyler, Nebraska to William Dexter and Anna Centennial (Merrill) Cox. She attended school in Spalding, Primrose, and Albion, Nebraska. Bernice was the school editor from 1929-1931 and graduated from the Albion High School in 1931. Bernice and Charles P. Merten were united in marriage on January 28, 1935. They ran a poultry hatchery in Platte Center, Nebraska until 1948 when they moved to Battle Lake, Minnesota where they were owner/operators of the Bonnie Beach Resort on Clitherall Lake, until 1972 when they retired and moved into their home in Battle Lake.
Bernice was a member of the League of Women Voters, The Gray Ladies, The Progressive Club and was a charter member of The Art of the Lakes Association which started in 1967 and incorporated in October of 1968. She worked at the Battle Lake Nursing Home until 1985 as a nursing assistant, after her retirement she assisted at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home and was active with the Battle Lake Senior Citizens.
Bernice is survived by her son Charles D. (Kathleen) Merten of Crookston, son-in-law, David Mortenson of Fargo, ND, six grandchildren, Susanna (Ken) Neuharth of Minneapolis, John (Cheryl) Jahoda of Ramsey, Theresa (Dr. David) Hanson of Battle Lake, Rebecca (Robert) Thelen of Minneapolis, Michael (LaVonne) Merten of Crookston and Barbara (Chad) Hulst of Crookston; ten great-grandchildren, Francis and Joseph Thelen, Zachary and Nicole Jahoda, Jessica (Mike) Gerberding, Danielle and Kenneth Hanson, Nicholas and Nathan Merten and Madison and Caitlin Hulst; three great-great-grandchildren, Lillian, Isabelle and Adaline Gerberding.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Charles P. Merten; daughter Mary Jahoda-Mortenson; son-in-law John F. Jahoda; brother, Ronald D. Cox and sister, Myra Curren.
Celebration of Bernice's Life: Monday, August 8, 2011 from 2 to 4 pm at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Lakewood Cemetery
