Bruce Bjerkaas

Bruce Osmund Bjerkaas, 68, Richville MN, passed away peacefully at Sanford Hospital, Fargo, North Dakota on June 14, 2015 surrounded by his family.

Bruce Osmund Bjerkaas was born at George B. Wright Memorial Hospital, Fergus Falls MN on February 25, 1947 to Jay Oscar and Anna Marie (Bangert) Bjerkaas. His early years were spent on the family farm south of Fergus. He attended Madison and Adams Elementary Schools and Washington Junior High School in Fergus. Bruce graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy where he played basketball for the Comets. He later attended classes at Wahpeton School of Science studying printing. Bruce was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force.

As a youth he was a Cub Scout and later an active Boy Scout in the Augustana Lutheran Troop, enjoyed playing sports and fishing, and, as many boys did, Bruce had a paper route. He also was an excellent clarinet player performing in the band, churches and contests. In later life he enjoyed playing cards, playing games and chess with his nephews and nieces, working on cars, and spending time with his extended family and friends. He spent most of his adult life working on the family farms near Rothsay MN and Erhard MN, as well as working at the Fergus Falls Daily Journal and in construction in Fergus.

Bruce is survived by his siblings: Allan Bjerkaas of Fergus Falls MN, Carlton Bjerkaas of Buckeye AZ, Delpha Haugrud of Fargo ND, Evangeline Stein of Fergus Falls MN, and Forrest Bjerkaas of Katy TX; brothers-in-law, Michael Haugrud of Fargo ND and Wayne Stein of Fergus Falls MN; sisters-in-law, Jude Bjerkaas of Fergus Falls MN and Susan Bjerkaas of Katy TX; fourteen nephews and nieces, twenty grand nephews and nieces and four great grand nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father in 2000 and his mother in 2004.

Memorial Service: 1:30 P.M., Thursday, July 23rd at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home Chapel in Fergus Falls with a visitation one hour prior to the service.

Military Honors: VFW Post 612 and Legion Post 30

Interment: Knollwood Memorial Gardens, Fergus Falls
