Bruce Smith

Smith, Bruce James, 80 died peacefully at home on March 8, 2017, leaving a gaping hole in the countless lives he touched.

Registered Pharmacist, Stockbroker, and Financial Planner he was also active in the communities in which he lived: Rotarian and Paul Harris fellow, Church Council President, member of various public boards, Men's church fellowship and bible study.

He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2008 and for 9 years was able to overcome and in some cases mask many of its symptoms and voluntarily chose to participate in groundbreaking research.

Having been diagnosed with liver cancer in October, 2016 he fought a valiant fight.

He will be remembered for his unprecedented devotion to family, intelligence, wit, sense of humor, grace and deep generosity.

He is preceded in death by his father, George Smith and his mother, Elizabeth Spielmann Koch. He is survived by his devoted wife Jan of 57 years, three children: Denise (Paul Wiese), Kevin, and Loren (Michelle), 6 grandchildren (Nathan Smith, Joshua Smith, Elichi Smith, James Wiese, Ryan Smith, Aaron Smith) and 5 great grandchildren (Henry Smith, EJ Smith, Porter Smith, Tegan Smith, Laurie Smith).

In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Funeral Services: 2 PM Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake

Visitation: 4-7 PM, Monday, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Battle Lake - and one hour prior to the service at the church
