Calvin Schmidt

Calvin A. Schmidt, age 57 of Moorhead, formerly of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at Sanford Health in Fargo, due to organ failure.

Calvin was born May 24, 1954, the son of Alvin E. and Lila (Thompson) Schmidt. He grew up on the family farm near Fergus Falls, where he took an active role in farming along with his brother and his parents.

In 1972, Calvin graduated from Fergus Falls High School with honors. Calvin was on the Fergus Falls Otters varsity basketball team and was involved in track and field, competing in the high jump. Calvin was also in the High School Band, where he held "first chair" in the trumpet section. He was an avid piano player in his younger years.

Calvin attended Fergus Falls Community College, now M State, for two years, where he was on the Spartans basketball team. He went on to Concordia College in Moorhead, where he received a degree in hospital administration in 1976. He purchased a home in Moorhead in 1977, where he lived until his death.

After college, Calvin "Cal" started his career with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, working in hospital contracting and in other positions. He worked with the company for his entire career, retiring in 2006.

Calvin enjoyed reading books and spending time with his friends. He also took pride in his home, which he remodeled, and also his yard.

Calvin is survived by his father, Alvin Schmidt of Fergus Falls; and his brother, Keith Schmidt of Fergus Falls. Calvin was single man and had no wife or children.

Calvin was preceded in death by his mother, Lila Schmidt.

Visitation: one hour prior to services at the funeral home

Funeral Service: 1 PM Tuesday, December 27, 2011, in Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls.

Interment: Knollwood Memorial Gardens, Fergus Falls
