Carl Gilbertson

Carl Gilbertson, age 96 of Battle Lake, died Friday, April 14, 2017, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, South Dakota.

Carl Gustav Gilbertson, the son of Carl Gustav Sr. and Mary Aphilia (Swenson) Gilbertson, was born on March 18, 1921, in rural Battle Lake, Minnesota, in the same house where he and Ethel later raised their family. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church and graduated from the Battle Lake High School in 1938. Carl furthered his education with two years at Augsburg College, where he was a member of the tennis team, and one year at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He was pursuing a major in architectural engineering. Although Carl was unable to serve in the military, he helped on the home front by leaving college to help in his dad's business when others went off to war.

On November 24, 1945, Carl married Ethel Marie Nelson at the First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake. After their marriage they made their home in Clitherall Township. They were part owners in a milk bottling plant in Battle Lake for a time and later operated the family dairy farm. Prior to his death, Carl had been living in an assisted living facility near his daughter, Cheri, in Clinton, MN, for the past five years. Carl enjoyed reading and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. His volunteer work included driving, income tax preparation for senior citizens, Stephen Minister, and Lakeland Hospice volunteer. Carl was a member of the First Lutheran Church and served on the council. He also served on the Battle Lake Senior Citizens board, the Clitherall Township Board, and eighteen years on the Battle Lake Public School Board.

He is survived by one son, Roger (Darla) Gilbertson of Minnetonka, MN; four daughters: Carolyn (Mark) Brown of Fairmont, MN; Barb (Charles) Carmichael of Woodstock, IL; Judy (Ken) Earle of Gig Harbor, WA; and Cheri (Jim) Kaye of Clinton, MN; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren, and by numerous relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel on December 26, 1997, and his brother and wife, Norman and Charlotte Gilbertson.

Funeral Service: 4:00 PM, Saturday, April 22, 2017, at First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake.

Visitation: one hour prior to the funeral

Clergy: Minister Bev McNeil

Interment: First Lutheran Cemetery in Battle Lake
