Clifford Sateren

Clifford Julian Sateren, 94, of Fergus Falls died at the Broen Memorial Home Tuesday, April 9, 2013. He was born December 23, 1918, to Martinus and Emilia (Faldalen) Sateren on the family farm Northwest of Elizabeth that his grandfather, Iver O. Sateren, homesteaded when he emigrated from Norway in the 1870's.
He attended rural school District 61 through 8th grade. After that, he continued working the family farm until it was sold. He later moved to Elizabeth, then Fergus Falls, working at the West Central Turkey Plant in Pelican Rapids until his retirement.
On June 7, 1941, he married Avis Thompson (John and Agnora Thompson) of Pelican Rapids. Avis died June 25, 1964. On May 16, 1981, he married Alice Thronson of Fergus Falls where they resided. He became a resident of Broen Home the summer of 2011.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Hedemarken Lutheran Church which he attended until he moved to Fergus Falls where he attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Cliff had a quick wit and great sense of humor, always enjoying a good joke. He loved music, enjoyed dancing and watching Polka Party and the Lawrence Welk show on TV. A talented musician, he was known for playing the accordion. He began playing the accordion at an early age, playing at resorts, for dances and various events in the community. Later in life, he continued to play at nursing homes, birthday parties and other occasions whenever asked. He was an avid Twins fan and helped organize the Elizabeth Baseball team in the early 1950's and enjoyed playing both baseball and softball whenever he had an opportunity. He was a founding member of the Elizabeth Sportsman's Club and served on the Boards of the Elizabeth Creamery and Carlisle Co-op Oil as well as other Boards and Committees throughout the area. More recently, he was very active at the Senior Citizen Center where he and his wife, Alice, were honored as King and Queen one year.
He was an avid and successful sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family, neighbors and friends. He spoke fluent Norwegian and was occasionally called upon to translate when people from Norway came to visit the area. He retained his strong Norwegian accent throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Avis; Parents, Martinus and Emelia Sateren; Sisters, Irene (Thoralf) Hexum, Inga (Vernon) Bachman and Selma Helgeson; Brothers, Elmer, Morris, Merriam and two siblings who died shortly after birth; Several Nieces and Nephews.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice; Daughter, Janice (Tom) Oster, Mesa, AZ; Son, Jerel (Mary) Sateren, Blackhawk, SD; Granddaughter, Janette Smith, Mesa, AZ; Great Grandsons, Brian, Rodger and Keith Smith and two Great, Great Grandsons, Skyler and Braxton Smith, all of Mesa, AZ; Sister-in-Law, Sylvia (Richard) Thompson, Pelican Rapids; Several Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and their families. He is also survived by two Stepdaughters, Janice (Elden) Herrmann, Moorhead, MN, and Irene Herrmann of Somerset, WI; four step-grandchildren: Jeffrey (Nina) Herrmann, Christopher (Natalie) Herrmann, Tracy Herrmann, and Julie (Sean) Johnson; and four step-great-grandchildren: Sasha and Eric Herrmann, Logan Johnson, Hannah Herrmann, and a great-grandchild due in June.
Funeral Service: 2 PM Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls
Visitation: 3 – 5 PM Saturday, with a 4:30 PM Prayer Service, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls. Visitation resumes one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment: Hedemarken Lutheran Cemetery, Rothsay
