Corinne Satterlie, 95, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Evansville Care Campus.
Corinne Florinda Satterlie was born on August 28, 1916, in Lund Township, the daughter of Albin and Bertha (Olson) Larson. She was baptized at the Mission Covenant Church rural Evansville and attended Christina Lake Lutheran Church as a teenager. Corinne was enrolled at the Oak Hill Country School for eight years where she walked to school everyday. She could not speak English when she started country school, just Swedish but slowly she learned. Her last four years were at Evansville High School graduating in 1934. The first year in high school she was introduced to a tall Norwegian, Sid Satterlie, and they hit it off. On April 10, 1935, she married Sidney Satterlie at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Evansville. To this union four children were born, Sid Jr, Kay, Phyllis and ViAnn. They lived in town for a short time. The couple then rented a farm and in the fall of 1936 they purchased the Satterlie farm in Evansville Township where they lived and farmed for 48 years. In 1983 they retired, built a house in Evansville and sold the farm to their grandson, Randy.
During the early years of Corinne's married life she was a farmwife and mother, but was so much more than that. She spent many hours helping Sid in the barn, keeping up the yard, garden and flowerbeds. Lunch was served promptly at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the farm or hauled to the field. Chickens were her "cash crop". Sid paid for the chickens and feed, Corinne fed them, picked the eggs and got to keep the money.
Corinne and Sid often enjoyed time with their family and friends. The coffee pot was always on and there was always a cookie, dish of sauce or ice cream and a sandwich for "Coffee Time". If you arrived at supper time, she could fix enough food in 30 minutes or less for whoever showed up plus 4 more. She was a great cook of vegetable soup, pickles, rice with meringue and apple pies just to name a few. Corinne grew up "making do" with what was available. She was an expert at patching clothes. Her eight grandchildren loved visiting Grandma and Grandpa's. At the farm the "Tea" canister always had ice cream wafer cookies. Picking pullet eggs from the rock pile or the chicken coop was a favorite activity, if allowed. If Grandma and Grandpa would come over in the pickup, there was always a Hershey bar to be found in the cubby hole.
Christmas Eve was always a special Satterlie Holiday. Grandma and "the girls", Phyllis and ViAnn, would spend hours preparing the tables and food - boiled potatoes, ribs, lutefisk (Marv paid for that) and many festive other dishes. Once we all gathered by the tables, the Christmas Story would be read from the leaflet she had saved specifically for this night. Prayers of thanks were offered and the feast would progress. Corinne's birthday was another holiday not to be missed. She would announce well in advance when she was serving coffee you best not miss the party.
Corinne was a dedicated member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. When Our Savior's and Immanuel Lutheran Churches merged and formed Faith Lutheran Church, she served as women's group president and in numerous other ways. She was adamant about mission quilts and would always have a box of quilt tops in her closet to bring to the next quilting day at church. Corinne was a member of the Evansville Garden Club, Senior Citizens, Farm Bureau and was a 4-H leader for the Sunnyside 4-H Club.
Corinne continued to live in her home mowing lawn and shoveling snow until moving to Evansville Care Campus in 2008 where she resided until her death.
Corinne is survived by her children Kay (Marion) Satterlie of Evansville, Phyllis Langlie of New Hope, ViAnn (Paul) Peterson of Elk River and daughter-in-law Tassie Satterlie (Malcolm) McLean of Alexandria, grandchildren Vicki (Jeff) Satterlie-Foshaug, Karen (David) Holte, Deb (John) Plaster, Randy (Julie) Satterlie, Kevin (Mary) Langlie, Eric (DeAnn) Satterlie, David (Katie) Peterson and John Peterson, 15 great-grandchildren, Jennifer Englund, Jamie (Heidi) Englund, Casey (Kim) Englund, Lynette (Justin) Perreault, LeAnn (Joe) Reznicek, Katie Satterlie, Kyle (Amy) Weets, Danielle Satterlie, Kerby (Jacki Meyers) Weets, Holly (Trent)Thoennes, Josh, Hunter and Caitlin Langlie, Blake and Allie Satterlie, and 11 great-great-grandchildren Cassandra Englund, Torri, Michaela, Braden and Caleb Englund, Iris and Lyla Perreault, Conway and Willow Englund, Parker Thoennes and Willow Reznicek; numerous relatives and friends.
