Curtiss Mortensen, 64, of Rogers, MN, formerly of Evansville, died Saturday, October 22, 2011 in Evansville Care Center.
Curtiss Merrill Mortensen was born May 27, 1947 in Alexandria, MN to Merrill and Irene (Alstad) Mortensen. The last of four children and the only boy, he grew up in Evansville, receiving his baptism and confirmation in Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Curtiss graduated from the Evansville High School in 1965 and attended the Fergus Falls Community College. He was drafted into the Army in 1967 and was honorably discharged in 1969. After his military service, he went to work for the US Postal Service as a letter carrier in Bloomington.
On August 28, 1976, Curtiss married Diane Flint in Grace Evangelical Free Church of Elbow Lake. Curtiss and Diane had two boys: Michael in 1986 and Eric in 1989.
Curtiss spent the majority of his working years working for the US Postal Service, working for over twenty-five years out of the Brooklyn Park Office. He was forced into early retirement on December 31, 2000, after being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Diane died on March 6, 2002, requiring Curtiss to raise the boys on his own.
Throughout life, Curtiss had many interests. Most important was Curtiss' love of spending time with family, friends and his boys. He enjoyed family get-togethers, Starbucks coffee outings and attending the numerous activities his boys were involved in. Spending time at Stowe's Lake, gardening, canning and cooking were just a few of his hobbies. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and trapping. He also enjoyed animals, raising his own chickens, sheep and ducks. It could be said that Curtiss enjoyed the ordinary things in life, coffee with friends, and the outdoors. Eventually finding retirement to be "too boring", Curtiss got a job at a Rest Area, where he maintained the property, a job he truly enjoyed.
Curtiss is survived by his two sons: Michael, Minneapolis, MN; and Eric, Rogers, MN; sisters, Sharon Denardo, Evansville; Beverly (John) Athey, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; Jackie (Gene) Wenstrom, Elbow Lake; mother-in-law, Delores Flint; many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, Curtiss was preceded in death by his wife Diane.
