Darlene Fletcher, 70 of Evansville died Saturday, November 6, 2010 at her home.
Darlene ViAnn Fletcher was born on March 20, 1940 in Evansville, Minnesota the daughter of Walter and Myrtle (Thornberg) Christenson. She was baptized and confirmed in Our Saviors Lutheran Church and graduated from the Evansville High School in 1958.
She was united in marriage to Kermit Fletcher on October 6, 1962 in Sisseton, SD. During the first few years of marriage, their summers were spent in a small travel trailer. Kermit worked road construction, so they called several Midwest locations home. Since that time, they have lived in Darlene’s childhood home in Evansville.
Darlene was a homemaker and served as financial secretary for Faith Lutheran Church. She had a strong faith and was an active member of the church, which included Faith Women/Ladies Aid. The church was an important part of her life. She spent Sunday afternoons at the dining room table going through the week’s offering envelopes. She also insisted on hand writing the names and addresses on every monthly church newsletter for the congregation.
In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling, her coffee group and Homemakers. She also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, word puzzles and collecting figurines, especially kittens. She was a people’s person who always remembered others by sending a note or card.
Her true passion was sewing. She would spend countless hours under an antique night lamp making sure every stitch was perfect. Her trademark “casserole carriers” have traveled across the country and were considered to be one of the favorite gifts at bridal showers. Her custom sewn Halloween costumes have also been passed on from grandchild to grandchild.
She was close to her family and especially admired her grandchildren, as many of her sweatshirts showed. She loved playing Yahtzee and Scrabble with them whenever she got the opportunity. Her pets also had a special place in her heart and were a constant focus of her attention. Her lap was never empty and a stray always found a home.
