Darrell Bennett Samuelson was born August 14, 1940 to Bennett and Ethel (Rogers) Samuelson in Erhard, Minnesota. At a young age, Darrell moved with his family to Oakland, CA where his father worked in the shipyard during WWII. They moved back to Erhard at the end of the war. He attended school District #278 and Pelican Rapids High School. Starting at a very young age, he worked with his father at the Hiway Garage in Erhard washing parts, tearing motors apart and helping rebuild and repair cars and farm machinery. On June 30, 1962, he was united in marriage to Mavis Stephenson at North Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Pelican Rapids. The couple made their home in Fargo briefly before moving to Fergus Falls. They were blessed with three children. He was employed with Engabretson Brothers and Gerald Evenson Trucking, both of Pelican Rapids and William Lemke of Fergus Falls. In the early '60s he began his over the road trucking career which took him from coast to coast and Canada. Soon after, he purchased his first truck and began his own business, Samuelson Trucking. He was leased to International Transport, Golden Ring Trucking and numerous other companies over the years. Later in life, he was employed by Kurt Myron and Stadum Plumbing and Gravel.
Darrell had many passions, one of them being auto racing. He was one of the board members responsible for the re-opening of West Central Speedway (Wee Town). He also participated in the races by owning and maintaining numerous race cars over the years. Many hours of fun and friendship were had at the Samuelson Shop.
