David Berry, 55 of Evansville died December 29, 2021.

Graveside Service will be Sunday, May 29, 2022, at 2:00 PM at the Mound Grove Cemetery in Evansville with full Military Honors by the West Douglas County American Legion Post #188.

David Berry, 55, of Evansville died Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at his home.

David Allen Berry was born to James and Marjorie (Wik) Berry on September 25, 1966, in Elbow Lake, Minnesota.  From the start David was always smiling and making others smile.  As a little one he learned to love music and used to sing himself to sleep at night.

David gave his life to the Lord at an early age when his big sister had the joy of leading him to the Lord.  He was confirmed in 1982, at the Calvary Covenant Church in Evansville.

David attended Evansville Public School, was involved in choir and band and was the “Tiger” mascot for years.  He graduated from Evansville High School in 1986. Dave was a part of a very close group of friends who continue to keep in touch.  He enlisted in the US Navy in August 1986, serving until August of 1990 on the USS Truett (FF-1095) where he was a Boatsman Mate and spent two tours on the Mediterranean Sea.  On one of those tours in 1988, he chose to be baptized in the Jordan River in Israel. In addition, that same year he received two letters of commendation from his Commanding Officer.

After his discharge he was employed with John Hanson Construction where he worked on many homes in the area as well as schools around MN.  Later, David was employed at Menards in Alexandria and at the time of his death was currently working at Voyager Industries in Brandon as a saw operator.  His most important “job” was being a friend to many!

David enjoyed so many activities he grew up doing with his family.  Hunting, fishing and music were a large part of his life. He sang with his dad and other male vocal groups throughout his life.  He recently started his own DJ business, naming it Berry Good Music (BGM) and was very happy to share his love of 80’s music with his friends mostly at Backroads Steakhouse in Evansville.  David was always happy to lend his sound system and talents out to the public for community events.  He had a lot of his father in him and enjoyed dressing up in different costumes to participate in 4th of July parades or Santa Days in Evansville.

David attended Calvary Covenant Church, where for twenty-five years he used his sound system skills to operate and improve the sound system. Every Sunday he was in the “man cave” doing “his thing”! He was very active in the Evansville Sportsman’s Club and Evansville Community Club.  Another way in which Dave followed in his dad’s footsteps was through woodworking with the guys at He-We & Me.

David joined the West Douglas County American Legion Post #188 of Evansville. He was proud to be the Commander of the post for many years in addition to being Chaplain and playing Taps. Memorial Day was special to David and he took great pride in making sure the Mound Grove Cemetery road was lined with flags and that the day was special to all.  He had just recently been chosen as District #7 Vice-Commander for the Department of Minnesota.

David especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and his witty comments made people laugh.  People were important to David, so he was often on his phone keeping in touch via social media with friends and family.   He would swing by his mom and sisters house to share his life happenings with them during the week and enjoy their home-cooking.  His passing created a huge hole in many lives, and he will be missed greatly.

David is survived by his mother Marjorie, sister Deb of Evansville, and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, and everyone who loved him dearly and called him friend.  He was preceded in death by his father James, and grandparents Dolan and Willetta Berry, and Clifford and Myrtle Wik.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred. Your gifts will be used to establish a local scholarship in David’s memory.

Funeral Service:  2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at Calvary Covenant Church in Evansville.

Visitation: Monday from 4 to 7 PM with a 6:30 prayer service at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Evansville and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Military Honors: West Douglas County American Legion Post #188 and the United States Navy Reserve

Interment will be this spring, on Memorial Day Weekend in Mound Grove Cemetery in Evansville.
