David Place

December 26, 1936 — January 13, 2014

David Place, 77, of Evansville died Monday, January 13, 2014 at the Evansville Care Campus Assisted Living. He dedicated his life to God, the congregations he served, and his family, and will be greatly missed by all who were touched by his love and gentle grace.

David Loren Place was born in Decorah, Iowa to Marvin and Esther Place. They moved to Red Wing, Minnesota before settling in Ellsworth, Wisconsin where David attended a one-room schoolhouse until eighth grade. Upon graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1955, David attended St. Olaf College where he earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Mathematics and Physics. Immediately, he entered Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. During his studies, he met Carol Ellingson, a Fairview Nursing School graduate. They married on April 7, 1963, a few months before David graduated from seminary.

David completed his Clinical Pastoral Education training at Emmanuel Lutheran Hospital in Portland, Oregon before receiving a call to be assistant pastor at Edison Park Lutheran Church in Chicago. He became pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Milaca, Minnesota in 1965 and in 1972 was called as the associate pastor at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Minneapolis. David would serve as pastor at Farmington Lutheran Church, Grace Lutheran Church in St. Paul, and St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in West St. Paul, Minnesota before moving to California. There he served as pastor at Bethel Lutheran Church in Cupertino from 1985 to his retirement in 2000. David has been called "a patient and quiet leader" with "a strong moral compass" by those who knew him as a pastor, mentor, and friend. Upon retirement, David enjoyed his ocean-side condo in Monterey, California while serving as interim pastor at churches in Aptos, Salinas, and Carmel Valley in California. Since 2004, he and Carol have split their time between their condo in Palm Springs, California and their family cabin on Eagle Lake near Battle Lake, Minnesota.

This past spring, Carol and David celebrated fifty years of marriage and friendship. They raised three children – Karen Place Nelson of Morgan Hill, California, Stephen Place of Bishop, California, and Jennifer Place Lumb of Asheville, North Carolina. David was a proud grandparent of six grandchildren who referred to him fondly as "Pops." Although he was not one to draw attention to himself, David influenced and touched a great number of people with his kindness, acceptance, and integrity.
