Delores Poynter, age 84 of Alexandria, formerly of Ashby, died Thursday, December 29, 2011, in Edgewood Vista, Alexandria.

Delores Irene Slegers was born on September 26, 1927, to Peter and Nellie (Koorn) Slegers near Milnor, ND. After graduating from Milnor High School in 1945, Delores moved to Seattle, Washington, and bucked rivets during WWII. Following the war, Delores moved to Fergus Falls and worked as a waitress at Skogmo Café.

On March 5, 1950, she married LeRoy Poynter. The couple operated a dairy farm north of Ashby until LeRoy passed away in 1982.

Throughout the years, Delores was a waitress at the City Restaurant in Ashby. She was also a hairdresser and nurse's aide for many years at the Ashby Nursing Home.

In December 2006, Delores became a resident of the Ashby Nursing Home. When the nursing home closed, she moved to Edgewood Vista in Alexandria, where she resided until her death.

Delores is survived by her daughters, Linda (Gary) Nelson of Battle Lake, and Dawn (John) Schjei of Gillette, WY; grandchildren, Shelly (Dan) Huseby of Willmar, Derrick (Kim) Nelson of Underwood, Kristi (Aaron) Arndt of Grand Forks, Kevin (Lisa) Behrens of Ashby, and Kenny Jr. (Kelly Fostad) Behrens of Dalton; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Sam Huseby, Kirby and Kia Nelson, Coen and Lyla Arndt, Lauren and Trent Landowsky, Quynn and Ayden Behrens; a sister, Lillian (Bill) Karp of LaCrescenta, CA; sisters-in-law, Ruth Slegers of Fergus Falls, Lois Slegers of Hood River, Oregon, and Shirley Poynter of St. Cloud; brothers-in-law, Ralph (Mary) Poynter of Windom, MN and Melvin Anderson of Fergus Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, LeRoy; an infant daughter, Kimberly; sisters, Marie Grewe and Margaret Castillo; brothers Adrian, Peter and Cornelius "Ted"; and a sister-in-law, Irene Anderson.

On the day Delores died, she told the nurse four times that she had to go home. She did.

Visitation: 3 – 5 PM Sunday, January 1, 2012, in Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Ashby.

Funeral Service: 11 AM Monday, January 2, in Peace Lutheran Church, Ashby, with visitation from 10 – 11 AM.

Interment: Kvam Cemetery, rural Dalton
