Delores Strand, 83 of Evansville passed away peacefully at the Evansville Care Campus on Saturday, September 19, 2015 surrounded by family.
Delores Elaine Strand was born into this world at a rural farmhouse near Brandon, MN to parents Lillie (Engnes) and Jennings Olson on July 21, 1932.
She attended schools in Brandon, Evansville and Alexandria.
She was united in marriage to Curtis Elness in 1950, and they had three children, Lynette, Gary and Sharon.
After raising three children on her own for a number of years, she met Ray "Sugar Ray" Strand at a diner where she worked in Lisbon, ND. They were united in marriage in 1959 and lived in Davis, SD until 1969. Two additional children were added to the family, John and Paul.
Delores (or Mama D as she was more widely known) was famous in the area for her confirmation, graduation and wedding cakes, and often had three stoves going at once in her home just to fulfill all of the orders. The frosting was her specialty, and her daughter Sharon may be the only one to know this secret recipe.
Over the years she has worked as a waitress, in the kitchen at the Evansville School, retail, and has provided home daycare. For nearly two decades she and Ray managed apartment and storage unit properties in Alexandria, MN, and Mesa, AZ.
Her home always had an open door to the kids of the community. As there was often a rock band practicing in the basement, there was always a crowd around, many also waiting for fresh cake trimmings and extra frosting.
She was a "hip" grandma that spent time on her iPad and on the social networks. Although her body started to fail her, her mind was always sharp, and she could jump right in on nearly any conversation.
In her later years, her creativity turned to sewing and making custom cards with personalized poetry for friends and family.
She is survived by her children Gary of Knoxville, TN, Sharon (Merle) Walberg of Evansville, John (LeAnn) of St. Michael, MN and Paul (LuAnne) of Glenwood, MN; grandchildren Bryan (Brenda), Jason (Linda) and Dustin (Melissa) Walberg, Elise (Kelly) Strickland and Rebekah Strand, Lynsey (Vince) Hofford and Tyler Strand, Marisa (Craig) Schneider, Nicholette Ross, Alison (Jordan) Ranum, and Kate (Jonny) Jacobsen; two sisters-in-law, Pearla Eid, and Evelyn Zelenak, as well as fourteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ray, daughter Lynette, brothers James, Lester and David, and her parents Jennings and Lillie.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2015 at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Evansville, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
A Memorial Service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Evansville on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Andrea Olson the presiding clergy.
Interment will be at the Mound Grove Cemetery in Evansville.
