Derek Kenneth Lien, age 31, of Apple Valley, MN died October 23, 2016 in Dover, DE. He was born on December 19, 1984 to parents Kenneth and Kathryn (Jacobson) Lien in Minneapolis, MN. He lived in Arden Hills, MN for the first 8 years of his life. He went to elementary school at Northside Christian School in Mounds View, MN. Moving to Fergus Falls, he went to Morning Son Christian School and then Fergus Falls High School where he graduated in 2003. He then went two years to MN State Community and Technical College in Moorhead graduating with honors with a degree in Construction Electricity in 2005.
He worked for Lowe Electric in Walker, MN for two years. One of their specialties was wiring log homes. Following this, he worked for Elite Line Services at the Twin Cities airport for 15 months. He then worked for Despatch Industries for two and a half years wiring and debugging industrial ovens.
For the past four years, he worked for UTI Engineering in Woodbury, MN as an Electrical Designer. He truly enjoyed this challenging job. It involved CAD work, electrical design and commissioning and interfacing between electrical contractors and the owner.
Derek will be remembered for his energetic and infectious passion, which he used to rouse excitement in others. His boisterous personality would enliven any occasion, often involving tossing his nieces and nephews in the air or sharing fervent opinions. He will also be remembered for his generosity, his willingness to help, and his strong work ethic and drive. He will be dearly missed.
Derek is survived by his parents, two sisters: Kirsten Lien of Walnut Creek, CA and Michelle (Levi) Erdmann of Bismarck, ND and one brother, Jacob (Morgan) Lien of West Fargo, ND. In addition, he is survived by nieces Marit and Eva Erdmann and Makayla, Makenzie and Avery Lien, nephews Dietrich and Sebastian Erdmann and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bernard and Alpha Lien and Elsine and Luther Jacobson.

Visitation: Sunday, October 30, 2016 from 3–6 P.M. with a prayer service at 5:00 P.M. at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls and resuming for one hour prior to the service.
