Edward Olson

Edward Vernon (Bing) Olson, 95, of Ashby, died on May 8, 2017 due to complications from liver cancer. He was born on December 7, 1921 in Charbonneau, ND. He was the son of Edward Vernon and Thora (Hanson) Olson. He was baptized in North Dakota and confirmed in the Erdahl Lutheran Church in Erdahl, MN. He graduated from Evansville Public School in Evansville, MN

Bing married Bernice Juline Evavold on April 15, 1944 in Ashby, MN.

Bing entered the United States Navy Reserves in 1943 where he completed his Aviation certification to fly the F6F Hellcat Fighter plane serving on the U.S.S. Yorktown during the World War 2 era. Bing left the Navy Reserves as a Lieutenant (junior grade). He received the Air Medal Award, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the Ashby Legion Post 357.

Bing was a member of Peace Lutheran Church for many years.

Bing started farming when he got out of the Navy, settling down on the farm west of Ashby with his wife Bernice. Bing continued to farm with his son Tom even after he and Bernice moved into town. Bing always looked forward to farming each Spring & Fall and last climbed into a tractor in the Fall of 2016 at age 94. Farming was Bing's life and his passion! He was also an avid card player, especially playing "Whist" on many Friday afternoons at the Senior center with friends. Bing hung out at the Short Stop uptown for many years and always enjoyed "working" there when the Dahlen family owned & operated it. Bing even got his very own parking space sign out in front of the building!! He was an excellent athlete as a younger man. Bing was an avid sports fan and attended many sporting events over the years watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as watching various sports on TV. He even received the #1 Sports Fan award one year. He was known to drive around to check the crops many times a day and everyone locally knew it was Bing's car. He loved to share his sweet corn he grew with many friends and family.

He is survived by 5 children, Patricia (Jack) Converse of Alexandria, Rodney (Sally) Olson of Glenwood, Brenda (Wayne) Risbrudt of Ashby, Thomas (Samantha) Olson of Ashby, and Constance Olson and Robin Ely of Grand Junction, CO., 18 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 1 great great-grandchild, 1 sister Gloria Rezac, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice J. Olson in 2012 and oldest son Terrence in 2014, his parents Edward and Thora Olson, Sisters Devona Olson, Lillian (Alf) Lindquist, Marian (Bob) Reine, Irene (James) Endreson, Pearl (Einar) Sande, Edith (Harlow) Cunningham, and two infant brothers.

Visitation: 5 - 7 PM Thursday, at Peace Lutheran Church in Ashby, resuming one hour prior to services at the church.

Funeral Service: 3 PM Friday, May 12, 2017, at Peace Lutheran Church in Ashby

Officiating: Pastor Kent Krumwiede

Military Honors: Ashby American Legion Post 357

Interment: Pelican Lake Cemetery, Ashby, Minnesota

Arrangements are with Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Ashby.
