Emilie E. Smith, 89, of Battle Lake, MN, died on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls.
Emilie Elizabeth "Bette" Smith was born on October 14, 1927 in Marietta, MN the daughter of Daniel and Ruth (Olson) Shields. She was baptized at the St. Augustine Lutheran Church in Marietta and confirmed in the Methodist Church in Perham MN. She attended school in Marietta, Glyndon and graduated from Perham High School in 1939. Bette spent one year in Minneapolis at the Persain Beauty School becoming a beautician.
In 1947, she started as a beautician with Sages Beauty Salon and in 1948, she worked for Esther's Beauty Shop in Fergus Falls. In December of 1949, she purchased a beauty shop in Battle Lake.
Bette and Donald L. Smith were married on September 13, 1952, in Perham, MN. After their marriage they purchased a home in Battle Lake and Bette moved her business to their home, retiring in 1992.
Bette was a Charter Member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and was very involved with the church, serving as the Sacristan for many years. She was also a member of the Ladies Society Circle and the Liturgy group at the church. Bette was a faithful volunteer at the Senior Center and the Good Samaritan Nursing home. She was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Bette loved to read her Bible and cookbooks, gardening (with Dorothy), sewing and crafts. She enjoyed baking cookies and other treats for her family and friends. Bette also enjoyed many hours of chatting with her longtime neighbor Carol and good friend Tootie.
Bette is survived by her two sons, Eugene (Sandy Danielson) Smith of Battle Lake and Darwyn (Wendy) Smith of Brainerd; four grandsons and their families, Andy (Megan) Smith and great granddaughter Sloane of Madison, WI, Nick (Dawn) Smith, great granddaughters Willow and Harlow of Prior Lake, MN, Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Smith of Crestview, FL and Kyle Smith of Minneapolis; many much loved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Bette was preceded in death by husband Don on May 26, 2004, parents Daniel and Ruth Shields, sisters Evelyn Isenhower, Elsie Hofland and Maren Ann Hoium.
In lieu of flowers memorials referred to Lake Region Cancer Center, Fergus Falls.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake.
Visitation: Friday from 4:30 to 7 PM, with a 6:30 PM Prayer Service at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday.
