Ethel M. Johnson, 100, of Apple Valley, MN, formerly of rural Wendell and Fergus Falls, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Community Assisted Living, Apple Valley.
Ethel Marie Johnson was born on January 17, 1914, to George and Mary Ann (Baumann) Wagner in Livingston County, Illinois. She was the ninth of twelve children and moved with her family to a farm in Minnesota at the age of seven. She attended a one room country school and as a teen was a very active member of 4-H Club, with several prize winning trips to the State Fair.
On September 18, 1937, she was united in marriage to Herbert Johnson at the Rock Prairie Lutheran Church and together they farmed in the Wendell area, where they raised two children and enjoyed the many large family gatherings of relatives that were a large part of their lives. They retired in 1976 and moved to a residence in Fergus Falls, until Herbert passed away in 1983 and Ethel moved to Chaska to be near her children.
She was very energetic and enjoyed many activities, such as following the Minnesota Twins baseball team, baking, canning, growing flowers, spending time with her grandchildren, and had many happy times traveling on bus tours with her sister Ruth and friends Elizabeth and Phyllis to many areas of the United States and Canada.
Ethel enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and quilting all her life. She was a prolific seamstress and loved sewing baby items, baby quilts, and adult patterned quilts that she exhibited and sold at local craft shows. In total, she made over a thousand baby quilts, numerous adult quilts and was most happy when family and relatives were the recipients of her handiwork. Three days prior to her death, she was embroidering a square of roses that was to be part of a larger quilt.
Ethel was active and healthy and reached many age-related milestones in her life. She drove her car until 93, lived in her own residence until 96, and continued living independently in a senior apartment until she was almost 99. She spent her last year and three months in a home setting in an Assisted Living house where she interacted daily and was cared for by a group of loving staff. She enthusiastically helped plan her 100th birthday party and was very proud that she had reached the century mark as well as reaching the highest age of all of her Wagner siblings, including her father who passed away at age 96.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; her eleven siblings, Verna Farr, Susie Woessner, Sadie Henning, Millie Woessner, Cora Knackendoffel, Henry Wagner, Ruth Woessner, Howard Wagner, Homer Wagner, Anna Belle Anderson, Harley Wagner, and their spouses.
Survivors include her son, Jerry (Kathy) Johnson of Lakeville, MN; daughter, Bonnie Jukam of Chaska, MN; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ethel lived a long and full life and will be missed by all who knew her.
