Ethel Nelson, 105 of Battle Lake died Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.
Ethel Mae Nelson was born on July 7, 1909 in Ryder, North Dakota the daughter of Theodore and Ida (Peterson) Jacobson. She attended elementary school in Underwood and Dalton and early high school in Oakes, North Dakota. She moved to Battle Lake in 1925, and graduated from the Battle Lake High School in 1927. After attending Business College in Fargo, she returned to Battle Lake and worked for the US Postal Service for forty years.
She married Kenneth F. Olson in 1934, he died in 1940. Ethel Married Julius Nelson in September of 1955. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and later, the merged First Lutheran Church. She was active in both churches, teaching Sunday School for many years and belonging to many church organizations. Ethel enjoyed her many friends throughout the country and knew most of the area's summer residents over the years because of her connection at the post office. She still enjoyed visiting with her old Sunday School students who came back to Battle Lake after being in her classes over seventy years ago.
Ethel is survived by her son, Kent F. Olson of Battle Lake and Scottsdale, AZ.; five grandchildren, Susan Olson (Bill Hughes) of Sebastopol, CA., Tedd F. Olson of Minneapolis, Mitch (Lori) Papke of Bayport, MN., Marc (Lisa)Papke of TeAnu, New Zealand and Blake (Joy) Papke of Bismarck, ND; four step-grandchildren, Cherie Ploof of St. Cloud, MN., Ginny Johnson of Springfield, MO., Brian Nelson of Battle Lake, and Kenny Nelson of Ghent, MN; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and by several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands; daughter, Kathleen (Olson) Papke; daughter-in-law, Claudia Olson; two sisters, Lilly Carel and LaVerne Williams; two brothers, Ernest and Ted Jacobson; and by one step-son and his wife, Richard and Grace Nelson.
