Eugene Elshaug, age 67, of Fergus Falls, died Monday, October 24, 2011 at Lake Region Hospital, Fergus Falls.
Eugene Wayne Elshaug was born on November 14, 1943 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, MN to parents Olaf and Olga (Bakken) Elshaug. Eugene lived on the family farm outside Underwood, and moved to Fergus Falls where he attended Fergus Falls High School. After high school it was his intention to join the Army with his brother, but was unable to due to a heart murmur. In his younger years Eugene worked on various farms in the Fergus Falls area as a hired hand, he also worked for Allied Van Lines Moving Company, and Medallion Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturing. Most significantly he found his calling as a Drug & Alcohol Counselor for Ottertail County working for over 28 years, retiring in August of 1999 for medical reasons. Eugene was instrumental in establishing Alcoholics Anonymous in Fergus Falls.
On February 23, 1980 Eugene was united in marriage to Sandra (Schroeder) at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, MN. To this union two sons were born, Jason and Jeremy. Eugene and Sandra were happily married for nearly 32 years. Eugene was always quick with a joke and enjoyed telling a good story… he loved to make people laugh. He was a Minnesota Vikings fan even when they disappointed. He enjoyed taking his wife and boys for rides in the country on his motorcycle. Eugene enjoyed hunting and fishing in his youth, watching Western movies and listening to records. He enjoyed making and watching home movies. Eugene loved to travel and had visited almost every state in the country. Eugene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls where he served on the church council and the board of elders.
On October 24, 2011 Eugene W. Elshaug died at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls at the age of 67 years.
Survivors include his wife Sandra of Fergus Falls; two daughters, Angela (Jason) Portell of Farmington, MO and Melanie Sledge; two sons, Jeremy and Jason Elshaug both of Fergus Falls; one step-daughter, Cindy Bagley of Erdahl, MN; two step-sons, Kevin (Nancy) Barnes of South Haven, MN and Curtis Barnes of Clear Lake, MN; one brother, Donald Elshaug of Fergus Falls; three sisters, Delores Hanson of Milaca, MN, Carol Mokler of May Flower, AR and Beverly (John) Johnson of Fergus Falls; 15 grandchildren, Lance, Riley, Jake, Gracie, Ryan, Carrie, Cassie, Josh, Candice, Ashley, Joey, Tillia, Jessica, Amy and Trevor; and 6 great grandchildren, Madison, Tori, Brooke, Alex, Colton and Mason. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents Olaf and Olga Elshaug and an infant sister.
