Fern Haukos, 92, of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, January 31, 2016, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.
Fern Jennie Bendhardus was born November 9, 1923 in Star Lake Township, the daughter of Augustinus and Jennie (Huggett) Benhardus. She graduated from Pelican Rapids High School and went on to attend Northwestern Bible College.
While working at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls, Fern met and later married Harold William Haukos on July 7, 1945, and they were blessed with two children.
Over the years, the family lived in several places, including California and Fairbanks, Alaska. In 1964, the family returned to Fergus Falls. Fern worked for a short time at the turkey plant in Pelican Rapids, and then went to work as a police officer for the Fergus Falls Police department, where she was one of two women police officers.
Fern was an avid reader and greatly enjoyed word puzzles. A woman of strong faith, she was a member of First Baptist Church and more recently, Woodland Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was church treasurer.
She is survived by a son, Shelby Haukos of Elbow Lake; a daughter, Sheila (Harold Holden) Haukos of Osakis, MN; a sister, Bessie Anderson of Minneapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; siblings, Lillian Vidger, Irene Jones, Raymond, George, Marvin, Ernest, Earl, and Marie Champlain.
Memorial Service: 1 PM Tuesday, February 2, 2016, at PioneerCare Celebration Center, Fergus Falls, with visitation one hour prior to services.
