Gabriel Todd Van Boven, 36, passed away on Monday, November 10 after a short, courageous battle with cancer. He was at his grandparent's lake home in Battle Lake, MN surrounded by his family when he died.
Gabriel was born in Bellingham, WA on March 24th, 1978 and went on to live an adventurous childhood in many places. As a child he enjoyed playing sports, fishing in Battle Lake, hunting in Wyoming, and traveling wherever his parents or grandparents would take him. After graduating from Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, MO Gabriel attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business. As an alumnus he forever remained an avid KU basketball fan.
Rather than settling down after college, Gabe chose to live all over the United States and Europe, traveling and meeting many special friends from all walks of life. During his travels Gabriel met the love of his life and best friend, Amanda Steinmetz. The two continued to travel along with their two rescue cats until settling down in Lawrence, KS in 2010. In addition to traveling, Gabriel also found happiness in his paintings, drawings, photography, and spending time with his family.
Along with Amanda, Gabriel is survived by his father and stepmother Gerrit and Twila Van Boven of Gillette, WY, his mother and stepfather Danetta and Dan Mendenhall of Olathe, KS, his sister and brother-in-law Dion and Justin Riss and very special nephew and niece Harrison and Amelia all of Gillette, WY. Gabe is also survived by his maternal grandparents Keith and Martha Fletcher of Battle Lake, MN, Brent Moore of Sheridan, WY, stepsisters Diana Houdek of Douglas, WY and Beth Burgess of Cheyenne, WY and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and stepmother Elaine Van Boven.
A celebration of his life will be held next summer at the lake in Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Gabriel to your favorite animal rescue organization.
