Gary Ness, 61 of rural Ashby, was lifted by his guardian angels and carried home Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at his home, after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Lakeland Hospice.
Gary Lee Ness was born on February 4, 1953 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the son of Willard and Phyllis (Eggum) Ness. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Dalton.
Gary and Linda Woldtvedt were married on December 15, 1973 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashby. Gary and Linda made their home in Ashby, where they were blessed with two boys. Gary started his career in sewer, water and road construction at an early age, and had the "privilege" of working at times with three of his uncles and his two brothers. He worked on many projects around the state, large and small, ironically bringing "water" to the headwaters of the Mississippi. Gary was employed with various companies throughout his career, spending many years with Delzer Construction and retiring from Eureka Construction in Lakeville, where he developed deep friendships. Gary enjoyed cross-country trips with Linda, fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He liked taking drives in his little white car, (his chapel on wheels) checking on the deer, and making his morning coffee rounds. Most important to Gary was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Gary was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Stalker Lake Sportsmens Club, Coots Unlimited, IUOE Local 49 and as a young man, a member of the Dalton Ski Jumping Club.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda; two sons, Kevin (Jennifer) Ness and Ethan (9) of Shakopee and Wesley (Jill) Ness, Brianna (6) and Chloe (2) of Otsego; mother, Phyllis Ness of Fergus Falls; mother-in-law, Lois Woldtvedt; two brothers, Darrel (Susan) Ness of Ashby and Dean (Barbara) Ness of Dalton; and by numerous relatives and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Willard; sister, Barbara Olson; and father-in-law, Howard Woldtvedt.
