Gary Ruehmann, 72 of Dead Lake, rural Richville, Minnesota died Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family.
Gary Paul Ruehmann was born on April 30, 1943 to Alice Marie Ayotte Ruehmann and Royal M. Ruehmann in Lockport NY.
He entered the Navy Reserve and served three years as a hospital corpsman aboard the USS Barry DD 933.
Gary graduated from Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, SD with a degree in Computer Programming and Computer Operations, Rochester Community and Technical College specializing in health care and worked as a mental health specialist/activity coordinator at the State Hospital in Rochester MN. In 1993 he became a Licensed Drug and Alcohol counselor/DDT Specialist through the State of Minnesota and worked for the State in this capacity for ten years.
In 1993, November 23 to be exact, he married N Jeanne Cannady, and inherited a full family. Gary's family was very precious to him and he so looked forward to Grandparent Camps. Children Nicki Peterson (Ken), Bill Cannady, Jennifer Sanderson (Mike Leonard) and Stacy Cannady always had a special place in Gary's heart as did his grandchildren Kate, Simon, Anna, Megan, Evan, Laura, Tyler and Jessica and great-grandchildren Tanner, Alivia and Connor. Family pictures abound in his Dead Lake home. Gone before him are his mother Alice Schoenrock and grandson Simon Litke.
He worked diligently for the Dead Lake Association for eight years, serving numerous pancakes, and creating an invasive species identification card that was so thorough that it was subsequently used by the Minnesota DNR.
In 2009 Gary and Jeanne started the Friends of the Feral Cat organization. In four years they provided services to over 1630 cats in Otter Tail and the surrounding counties, preventing the birth of many homeless cats.
In 2012 Gary received the diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndromes, a group of disorders caused by poorly formed or dysfunctional blood cells which occurs when something goes wrong with the bone marrow. In early 2015 he was diagnosed with leukemia. He said that he was able to deal with his illness because he had his beloved wife Jeanne, "a life partner who is truly working on an extremely thorough program on a daily basis" and thanks her for giving him this added time. Her unflagging care allowed him to spend his final days at home with loved ones.
