George Schmid, 81 of Battle Lake died Saturday, February 13, 2016, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.
George John Schmid was born on October 5, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois the son of George Joseph and Hazel (Oates) Schmid. He was baptized and confirmed in the St. Hilary's Catholic Church. George attended school in Chicago graduating from the Amundson High School in 1952, then two years at a Chicago Technical School and two years at Moorhead State University. He served three years with the US Army, stationed at Ft. Lewis in Washington with an artillery unit.
George and Valerie Von Plachecki were married on February 10, 1962, in the St. Luke's Catholic Church in River Forest, Illinois. After their marriage they lived in the Chicago area for eight years. George was in business with his Dad, operating G.J. Schmid and Son, a wash machine repair business and they also placed laundry equipment in two hundred locations in the Chicago area. In 1970, they moved to Battle Lake where they owned George's Laundromat and Val's Variety Store. After selling his business he was employed with Galenas Plumbing and Heating in Fergus Falls as an accountant, then with the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center as a custodial engineer and also drove school bus for the Battle Lake Public School. He enjoyed Sudoku puzzles, Jigsaw puzzles, loved basketball and especially enjoyed all the family lake activities and living on West Battle Lake. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie; four sons and families, Michael (Stefanie) Schmid, Joseph and Anna of Minneapolis, John Schmid of Detroit Lakes, Patrick Schmid and Fiona of Minneapolis and G.J. (Megan) Schmid, Brinkley and Georgie of Garfield; twin brother, Richard (Nancy) Schmid of New Hampshire; and by numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Hazel Schmid and one sister, Virginia.
Funeral Mass: 11 AM, Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake.
