Georgia Skjold, 97, of Battle Lake, died Sunday, May 29, 2011 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.
Georgia Elizabeth Skjold was born on November 3, 1913 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of David and Hester (Munson) Schomburg. She graduated in 1931 from North High School in Minneapolis, and then furthered her education at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.
Following graduation, she was employed by her father at his men's clothing store where she met her husband. Georgia and Dr. Arthur Skjold were married in 1936 and resided in Minneapolis. Georgia was a homemaker and Art was a physician and surgeon. To this union four children were born: Steve, Tony, Chris and Sue. In 1949, Georgia and Art purchased a cabin on Clitherall Lake and enjoyed time with family and friends there. They also traveled with the Shriners on several trips. Together they had "loads" of fun going to antique shops, flea markets and garage sales to find their many treasures. Georgia's hobbies included flower gardening, collecting and researching antiques, reading poetry, and making greeting cards on her laptop computer. She was an avid reader, completed thousands of crossword puzzles and enjoyed live theater. She was always current with news and politics. Georgia was also a devoted Vikings and Twins fan.
Throughout her life, Georgia found great pleasure in being a volunteer and supporting charities. She was active with Goodwill Industries, ARC, and the YWCA. She loved to travel with her family. Georgia went on two memorable cruises – one to the Caribbean and the other through the Panama Canal. Her other travels brought her to New York City, Washington D.C., Florida, The Dells, Duluth, and the Cayman Islands. One of her favorite vacations was a road trip to the Black Hills. She cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Art died in 1992 and in 1994 Georgia moved to the Sagamore Condominiums in Plymouth, MN. She moved to the Lakeview Senior Living Apartments in Battle Lake in 2007 and organized a trivia group for the residents. She was a longtime member of Victory Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, where she was instrumental in starting the church library. This interest continued as she worked to create libraries at both Sagamore and Lakeview. Georgia was a member of the Eastern Star and once in Battle Lake, she transferred her church membership to Vining Lutheran Church.
She lived at the Lakeview Apartments until October 2009 and then entered the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center. The staff at Good Sam truly became her best friends.
Georgia is survived by four children; Steve (Mary) of St. Paul, Tony of Burnsville, Chris (Angeline) of Twin Lake, Mich. and Sue (Bruce) Froslee of Clitherall; four grandchildren and their families, Ben (Kara) Skjold, Henry and William of St. Paul, Josh (Agata) Skjold, Oskar, Max and Basia of Lodz, Poland, Liz (Chad) Christianson, Chase and Conner of Santa Fe, NM and Andrea Skjold of Twin Lake, Mich.; two step-grandchildren, Sarah (Teddy) Muchow, Madison, Andrew and Alex, and Ben Froslee all of Fergus Falls. She is also survived by two nieces, Beverly Goodman of New York City, and Kathy West of Shakopee. Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, Art, and by her sister, Frances Grant.
