Gerald "Jerry" Stoick, 77, of rural Battle Lake, died Friday, September 21, 2012, at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls.
Gerald Dean Stoick was born on June 7, 1935 in Nassau, Minnesota, the son of Gust and Velda (Smith) Stoick. He was baptized and confirmed in the St. James Catholic Church in Nassau. He attended school there and graduated from Marietta High School in 1953. Jerry entered the U.S. Marine Corps for two years serving as a radio operator in Korea. After his discharge he attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, graduating in 1960 with an Agricultural Engineering Degree.
Gerald and Nila Mae Heller were married on June 7, 1958 in Revillo, South Dakota, making their first home in Brookings, SD while finishing college. Jerry worked two summers for Allis Chalmers in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. After graduating, he began his 33 years of employment with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, working in Harlem and Poplar, MT; Rosebud, SD; then in the area office in Aberdeen, SD; followed by Minneapolis, MN, retiring in July of 1993. After retirement they built their home on Blanche Lake of rural Battle Lake, wintering since 2002 in the Pine to Palm Resort Park in Weslaco, Texas. He had a life long love for music, was a drummer for the SDSU Pride of the Dakotas, Battle Lake Community Band, the Rio Grande Valley Band in Texas, and many others in between. He was an active leader with the Lions Club, serving as District Governor in SD (71-72), Boy Scouts (Scoutmaster for over 25 years, and currently a Unit Commissioner), and served in many roles for the American Legion, VFW, Knights of Columbus (Grand Knight), and was an instructor for AARP Defensive Driving. He enjoyed square dancing since 1966 as a member of many clubs, of late with the Battle Lake Pairs & Squares. He also enjoyed golfing, water skiing, ballroom dancing, card playing, among many other activities. Jerry actively lived out his faith through service in the communities where he lived, as a youth leader in MT, building the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in Rosebud, Eucharistic minister in Aberdeen & St. Michael, and currently as an usher at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake. Through the years he served as a Fire Chief, managed the Rosebud Spotted Tail golf course, served on the City Planning for St. Michael, and other community organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Nila; Mother, Velda Stoick of Marietta; six children: Alan (Diane) of Kent, WA; Ken (Bonnie) of Monticello, MN; Crystal (Scott) Stolle of Aberdeen, SD; Dean (Kim) of Sioux Falls, SD; Mark (Mary) and Mike (Kari), both of St. Paul; sixteen grandchildren: Laura Stoick, Mariah Stolle, Yanika (Alex) Farmer, Marisa & Joey Stoick, Jessica Stolle, Amber, Kendra, & Logan Stoick, Lexi Vetsch, Cassie Stoick, Autumn Stolle, Teegan, Sasha, Adeline, and Elizabeth Stoick; five brothers and one sister: Ron (Betty) of Albert Lea; David (Millie) and Roger (Kathy) both of St. Michael; Shirley Kelly of Austin, TX; Dennis (Dorothy) of Marietta, and Rich (Margie) of Houston, TX; foster brother, Pete (Joan) Frank of Loretto; foster sister, Betty (Dale) Johnson of Blaine; and by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his father Gus Stoick and brother-in-law Jim Kelly.

Funeral Mass: 11 AM Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake.
Visitation will be at the church on Monday beginning at 4:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.

Interment: Body Donation to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program, Minneapolis, with burial at a later date.
