Gertrude Hermann, age 95, died on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at PioneerCare Center in Fergus Falls.

Gertrude (Trudy) Emma Hermann was born on December 13, 1920, in Fergus Falls, the daughter of Fredrick and Mathilda (Baumgarten) Schoening. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of West Friberg Twp and attended school in District 208. She graduated from Washington High School in 1939 and began working at the Fergus Falls State Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. In 1943 she began nurses training at Eitel Hospital in Minneapolis. During her training, she also worked in Topeka, KS and Springfield, MO. In 1946 she graduated from Eitel Hospital with a Degree as a Registered Nurse. Trudy was engaged to Robert Tripp, who died while serving in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Boise during WWII.

On December 4, 1945, she married Frederic Hobbs in Arkansas. The couple resided in Springfield, MO. On January 7, 1947, their daughter Linda was born. Shortly after her birth, the couple moved to Fergus Falls where Linda died of pneumonia in May of 1947. Trudy worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Fergus from 1947 until July 1, 1949, when she was employed as a Registered Nurse at the Fergus Falls State Hospital until retirement in 1982, returning to work briefly until 1984.

In May, 1954, she married Robert D. Hermann in Sisseton, SD. The couple resided in Fergus Falls and became the parents of two adopted children from Korea, Paul and Bonnie. The couple enjoyed traveling to many states and Canada. They also had a mutual interest in railroads and traveled on tourist trains, as well as enjoying collecting railroad memorabilia.


Her hobbies included bowling (which she enjoyed for 40 years), vegetable and flower gardening, her tropical fish business/hobby, bingo, crossword puzzles and board games.

Trudy is a member of St. James Episcopal Church where she worked on the monthly newsletter, was a greeter, assisted with the altar guild, and was Ladies Circle Treasurer. She was a former member of the MNA (Minnesota Nurses Association) and was an active member of the State Retirees' Association.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Robert on April 9, 1991, her daughter Linda in 1947, and one brother, Clarence Ralph, who died at the age of three.

Her family includes two children, Paul (Sandra) Hermann of Fergus Falls, Bonnie (Tom) Wegner of Des Moines, IA; two step children, Ronald (Karen) Hermann and Bette (Delvin) Menze of Ottertail, MN; 9 grandchildren (John, Timothy, and Rachel Hermann, David (Lisa) Wegner, Heidi (Neng) Lee, Andrea (Scott) Rogers, Heather (Andrew) Hermann-Stehr, Dan (Janelle) Menze, and Michael (Denise) Menze); 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Berniece Dalluge of Fergus Falls; and special friends Dale and Beverly Svendsgaard, along with nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 17, 2016, at St. James Episcopal Church, 321 S. Lakeside Drive, Fergus Falls

Visitation: Thursday, November 17, 2016, one hour prior to the service at St. James Episcopal Church
