Glen Marquardt

September 1, 1939 — December 7, 2010

Glen Marquardt, 71 of rural Henning passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010 , at the Lakeland Hospice House in Fergus Falls .

Glen Earl Marquardt was born on the date Hitler invaded Poland , September 1, 1939 , and departed on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 2010 . He was a World War II buff, enjoyed the Military channel, and anything about airplanes, an interest gained when he served as a U.S. Air Force Airman Second Class from 1957-1961. Stationed in Iceland , he worked as an aircraft mechanic.

Glen was born and raised in Peoria , Illinois , where he was baptized at Bethel Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Manual Training High School in 1957. Here he received training for a life-long hobby in woodworking. Glen and his father, also Glen, turned cherry wood into beautiful cabinets in their woodshop on East Battle Lake . The family owned and operated Linden Park Resort on East Battle during Glen’s high school years, and Glen attended Battle Lake High School at that time.

Glen and his father both retired to the family home on East Battle Lake where the Marquardts had their favorite fishing holes. They were part of a fathers-and-sons fishing expedition to Manion Lake in Canada every May. Eventually the group expanded to close-knit buddies. Glen also loved deer hunting, and spent many a November at a family friend’s shack.

Glen was part of the Minnesota Motors family of employees for 39 years where he worked in the body shop. After work, he enjoyed golfing and get-togethers with his many friends there. Everybody—at the shop, Glen’s bowling partners, et al.--will long-remember Glen’s quick one-liners and jokes. He had a way of talking in similes passed down from Grandfather Larson that made everyone smile.

Glen enjoyed listening to the Canadian Brass and barbershop quartet music while driving his stick-shift, burnt orange Chevy Colorado , deemed his “pumpkin.” This was also his nickname for two Dobermans in his life, Peggy I and Peggy II. Peggy II’s ashes will be buried with Glen at the Eagle Lake Lutheran Church cemetery.

Glen was an attentive family member and neighbor. He was always plowing or mowing for us, and most important, he listened to our concerns and always came up with common-sense solutions. He was a real rock. He will be sorely missed by his wife Sharon (Moe) and all of her family.

He is also survived by one daughter, Kathryn (Michael) Goodwin of Denver, Colorado; two nephews, Tim (Patti) Berry of Coulterville, Illinois and Tom Berry of Seattle Washington; and by numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Della (Larson), by one sister, Patricia (Marquardt) Berry , and her son, Terry.
