Goldie Leona Widness, age 80, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center in Battle Lake, Minnesota.

Goldie was born October 17, 1933 the daughter of Walter and Rachel (Hotchkiss) Sydow in Girard Township and grew up in Clitherall. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. Goldie attended Clitherall School first-eighth grade and graduated from Battle Lake High School in 1951.

Goldie Sydow and Knute Widness were married June 14, 1951 (Flag Day) with consent from their folks at an Underwood Parsonage. They made their home in Clitherall for 56 years until Knute enter the Veteran's Home, and she moved into her own apartment in Battle Lake and later into the Lakeview Senior Living and finally Battle Lake Good Samaritan. Goldie was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake.

Goldie worked many different jobs other than being a wife and mother to four children. Some of her jobs included cooking and waitressing, cleaning cabins and homes, antique shops and owning her own cafe in Clitherall. Goldie was proud to have worked at Glendalough Game Farm years ago and talked about cleaning birds for dignitaries such as Governors Hubert Humphrey and Fritz Mondale. She also was employed by the county as a home health aide. Goldie served on the City of Clitherall Council for a couple terms. She was also known in Clitherall for having one of the scariest Halloween yards that children/adults loved and kept coming back every year. Goldie loved to decorate for all holidays inside and out.

She and Knute enjoyed going dancing to old tyme music with friends at local establishments and having coffee with friends at The Shoreline before her declining health. She once in a while would sneak away to the casino for a day of fun with friends.
Goldie also enjoyed bird watching, Her hobbies included painting landscapes and decoys, crocheting, knitting, sewing, quilting and other needlework, reading mysteries, playing cards (Whist) and games (Sequence) with friends and family, doing word puzzles, growing flowers and vegetables in her gardens.

She is survived by daughter, MarJean Martelle (friend, Tom) of Underwood; sons, Warren (Kathy) Widness of Wadena, Steve (Janet) Widness of Clitherall and Gary Widness of Battle Lake; grandchildren: Rebecca (Juanma) Schumacher-Rodriguez of England, Kenneth Widness of Inver Grove Heights, Danial (Alison) Schumacher of Barnesville, Jennifer (Bryan) Dombroski of San Diego, CA, Kasey (Casey) Widness of Bloomington, Hallie (Derek) Shol of Underwood and Joe Martelle of Fargo, ND; great-grandchildren: Kaele Culver, Blake Widness, Graham and Taylor Schumacher, Olivia Schumacher-Rodriguez, Alton Widness and one expected in October; siblings: Forrest Sydow, Holly Poser, Betty Lou Moe, Janet (Marlin) Genz and David Sydow; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Kenneth "Knute" January 28, 2014; parents and siblings, Henry "Hank" and Roger Sydow, Claudia Lattery.

Funeral Service: 3:00 PM Sunday, September 28, 2014 at First Lutheran Church of Battle Lake, Minnesota
Visitation: one hour prior to services

Burial: First Lutheran Church Cemetery of Battle Lake, Minnesota
