Hazel Dyrland

Hazel Dyrland, 94, of Battle Lake died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at the Broen Memorial Home.




Hazel Marianne Dyrland was born October 8, 1915, in Eagle Lake Township, rural Battle Lake to Ludvig and Gustava (Nordvik) Mekalson. She was baptized at Grue Lutheran Church and later confirmed at Sverdrup Lutheran Church. She attended country school in Otter Tail County.




On September 10, 1946, Hazel was married to Odin Dyrland in Dalton. They lived on a farm by Dalton and in 1948 moved to Battle Lake. Hazel worked at the Dalton Creamery, Battle Lake Hatchery, Dr. Howland Dental Office and Nakagaki Poultry Farm.   In October of 1995, she moved into Summit Village in Battle Lake and in November 2008 moved to Fergus Falls and lived in River Bend Apartments. In March of 2009 she became a resident of the Broen Home.




Hazel was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and corresponded with her Norwegian relatives. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, quilting with the First Lutheran Church ladies, gardening and reading. She was well known for her good cooking and hospitality. She loved company and especially enjoyed her family. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake.




She is survived by her daughter, Helen Franklin of Fergus Falls; three grandchildren, Brad (Dawn) Franklin of Moorhead, Brian Franklin of Fergus Falls and Brenda (Craig) Harrington of Fergus Falls and three great grandsons, Joey, Jonny and Jake. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Odin on March 13, 1985; son-in-law, Lee Franklin on September 8, 1995; brothers, Martin, Marvin and Roy Mekalson; sisters, Inga Johnson, Lillie Langren, Sarah Albertson, Gunda Glemaker and Alice Holo.
