Helaine Shaffer

Helaine Victoria " Lainy" Shaffer, age 71, of rural El Dorado Springs, MO, passed away May 19, 2013, at Community Springs Healthcare . She was born June 1, 1941, to Benjamin and Florence (Larson) Lystrom in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
While in Minnesota Lainy attended District 72 country school and Battle Lake High School, then at the age of 15 she and her family moved to Garden Grove, California and she graduated from Garden Grove High School in California.
On February 20, 1959, she married Wesley Jay Shaffer and to this union three children were born: Charlotte, Anita and Charles. Lainy looked at life as an adventure and as a challenge.
While living in California Lainy and Wes were the owners/operators of two businesses, and Lainy worked as an Amway Direct Distributor and for a period of time and was a dental assistant. After selling their business in California they moved back to Minnesota and bought a farm near Ashby. While there she and Wes operated a registered dairy, managed a multi-faceted business in Ashby, Lainy was also a real estate agent. They later returned back to the farm starting a game/farm reserve and raising 35, 000 pheasants.
Looking for a little warmer climate they headed south to Clinton, Oklahoma where they bought a beautiful ranch on the river and raised beef cattle. They also raised Airedale and fox terrier dogs on that ranch. During this time Lainy was also working to gather information on the family genealogy something she found truly interesting.
Finding it a little too hot in Oklahoma Lainy and Wes opted to move a little further north, purchasing a farm in Eldorado Springs, Missouri in 2011.
While in Minnesota, Lainy was active in the Grue Lutheran Church, serving in various positions and was a Sunday School teacher.
Lainy was a proud 17 year breast cancer survivor but then a year and a half ago she received a diognosis of small cell lung cancer. Like everything else she took this on as a challenge and fought long and hard, but some battles are not meant to be won. Lainy now moves on to yet another adventure in heaven with her Lord and Savior. She will be missed dearly by all those who love her so much.
Preceding her in death were her parents Benjamin and Florence Lystrom and a beloved grandson Justin Woldahl.
Survivors include: her husband Wes of Eldorado Springs, Missouri ; three children: Charlotte (Gene) Woldahl of Ashby, MN; Anita (Kevin) Hoeper of Blue Grass, MN; and Charles (Michelle) Shaffer of Orange County, CA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters; and one brother.
Funeral Services: 2 PM Friday, May 24, 2013 at Grue Lutheran Church, Rural Ashby
Visitation: Thursday from 4 to 7 pm with a 6:30 pm Prayer Service at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Ashby - and one hour prior to the service at the church.
