Irene B. Palm, 96, of Fergus Falls, formerly of Ashby Minnesota passed away June 28, 2014 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.
Irene Berdella Palm, daughter of Alfred and Caroline (Erickson) Evavold was born May 18, 1918 in Eagle Lake Township. She was baptized and confirmed at Grue Lutheran Church. Irene graduated from Dist#114. May 12, 1936 she married John Hodnefield of Battle Lake where they lived at the time of his death in 1941. Together they had one son, Jerald. After John's death, Irene went to work at Frees Cleaners in Fergus Falls and also at a defense plant in Duluth MN until the end of the war.
On January 1, 1946 Irene married Gordon O. Palm of Ashby MN. They owned and operated a Red Owl Grocery store for several years. Later they started and worked at the Standard Service Station and Garage for eight years. After selling their business, they spent several months in Honolulu, HI where they attended their son Jerald's Marriage to Nancy Fuji.
They moved to Anaheim, CA and went into the apartment business both their and Orange, CA. Irene managed the apartments along with the help of her husband. While living in CA they were members of Garden Grove Community Church where Irene was a volunteer for a number of years at the Hour of Power.
In 1980 they sold their apartments and moved to Kauai, HI. The joined the Lihue Christian Church where she worked as a volunteer. In the spring of '86 they moved back to Ashby and lived there until 1992, spending the winters in southern states. They then moved to Branson, MO for four years and back to Ashby. Their last two winters of 1998 and 1999 were spent back in Kauai. Irene enjoyed gardening, traveling and stitchery. She also enjoyed making Norwegian foods for family and friends.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband's John and Gordon; beloved son Jerald; sisters, Betsy Evavold, Mabel Tollefson, Marian Palm; brothers, Leonard, Roy, Alvin, Elmer, Arthur and Herman Evavold; nephews, Chester Palm, James, Larry, Donald, Morris, Ron Evavold and Walter Tollefson; nieces, Betty Herness, Marlys Buetling and Marilyn Melaas.
Surviving Irene is her daughter-in-law Nancy Hodnefield; granddaughter, Jan; grandson, Eric; great-granddaughter, Trudy; sister-in-law Virginia Palm; plus many nieces and nephews.
Funeral: 11am Thursday July 3rd, 11am at Grue Lutheran Church of rural Ashby
Visitation: one hour prior to the service at the church.
