James W. Anderson, Sr., 92, of Evansville died Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Evansville Care Campus.
He was born on April 15, 1924 on Section 16 of Lund Township of Douglas County to Gustave and Caroline (Millard) Anderson. He was baptized in 1928 at Christina Lake Lutheran Church by Rev. Constant Johnson and confirmed in 1938 by Rev. S.L. Swenson. James grew up in Lund Township and attended school at Melby School District #102 from 1930 to 1938 and then Evansville School, graduating in 1943. On April 2, 1944, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Dalum at the Norwegian Church parsonage in Evansville by Rev. Ernie T. Holm. The couple made their home in a few locations in Lund township before purchasing the Roy Lang farm in section 11 about 1952. Raising crops and milking cows. In the summer of 1955 a severe windstorm ruined the corn crop, so Jim wanted to supplement the farm income, several others from Lund township had worked on "the Lakes" including his brother Burton, Jim then worked on the lakes and the family ran the farm, selling the cows in 1967, but continuing to raise grain and alfalfa. James became a member of the Merchant Marine, working in the engine rooms of Great Lakes ships, becoming a 1st Assistant Engineer for 27 years. He retired in 1985 but worked as needed on ships until 1992. Evelyn passed away on July 31, 1998.
James enjoyed putting up firewood, trapping and the Great American West – cowboys.
James is survived by his children: James (Noritta) Anderson of Evansville, Gwen (Terry) VanDyke of Frazee, Reid (Judy) Anderson of Evansville, Jon (Patricia) Anderson of Melby and Dan Anderson of Evansville; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers: William, Burton, Clinton and David and three sisters: Dorothy Hendrickson, Henrietta Berglund and Armell Roos.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church.
