James Heathington

June 14, 1947 — September 2, 2015

James (Jim) Lanier Heathington died on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, of complications following recent stomach surgery, and a bi-lateral lung transplant nearly five years ago. The funeral service will be Friday, September 11, 1:30 viewing and 2:00 service, graveside only at First Lutheran Church Cemetery, Battle Lake.

He was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1947 in a small town called Rotan, near Abilene in West Central Texas. He graduated McMurray University in Abilene in 1969 and went on to coach football and other sports in towns and cities all over Texas. While the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Comanche, TX he took his team from 0 and 10 to a district bi-championship.

Jim also coached and taught in Houston, TX and in one of its suburbs, Pearland. It was while living there that he met his wife, Candace. They married in 2000 and vacationed in Battle Lake every year, a favorite place because Candace's parents, Marv and Hazel Weiss, once lived on West Battle Lake. After Jim retired from teaching and coaching in 2010, after 40 years, and Candace retired from advertising, they searched for a home in the area and settled on Elbow Lake, Underwood.

He loved the game of football, and subscribed to every football channel offered by Direct TV so he could watch any NFL (mostly Dallas Cowboys) and college game (mostly University of Texas) that is offered. He loved to fish and spent most waking hours of his healthy life out in the boat. His weakness from the transplant prevented many activities, but he had been an avid golfer who loved the game and camaraderie, who shot in the mid-eighties regularly.

Jim is survived by his wife, Candace Heathington, daughter Ann Heathington and her children Shyann and Wyatt of Lazbuddie TX; son John Heathington (Misty) and their children Brylan, Landree and Mabry of Merkel, TX; son-in-law Kolby Bizzell and his son Kash of Keller, TX and nephew Phil Schueller (Tina) and their son Gage of Benbrook, TX.

He is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Helen Heathington; daughter Jamie Heathington Bizzell (Kolby); sister Paula Heathington and her son, nephew Paul Schueller.
