James “Jim” Hoff, 57 of rural Battle Lake passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at his home surrounded by family who loved him.
James Robert Hoff was born on May 25, 1960, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota to Robert and Laura (Adolphsen) Hoff. Jim was baptized and confirmed at Pelican Lake Lutheran Church in Ashby. He graduated from Ashby High School in 1978, and then furthered his education at Wadena Technical College in Telecommunications.
Jim and Holly Ann Derby were married on November 20, 1983, in the United Methodist Church in Herman, Minnesota. They had met at Norway Beach Resort, and after their marriage they lived in the Ashby area, until moving to their farm on Hwy 12. Jim worked for the Ashby Equity, and the Farmer’s Elevator in Ashby before starting with the US Postal Service, starting in Fergus Falls and then transferred to Battle Lake, working fifteen years retiring as a rural Mail Carrier.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, motorcycling, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, and spending time with his family. Hunting with hounds was one of his favorite ways to hunt. Jim could often be found hunting at his woods where they had a cabin. Jim spent a lot of time hunting and fishing with his son and Grandson’s. Jim was also musically inclined playing several instruments. Jim played for fun and joked that his most common request was to quit playing. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes with family and friends in a horseshoe league in Ashby. Jim was the life of the party at family gatherings, often making others laugh.
