Joan Maack Pinkney, 73, of Shoreview and formerly of Foxhome and Fergus Falls died Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice in Brooklyn Park.
Joan Winnefred Maack Pinkney was born on June 29, 1943 in Andrea Township to John and Ida (Seelye) Maack. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. Joan attended school in district 59, Wilken County Andrea Township and High School in Fergus Falls. She attended Fergus Falls Community College and Moorehead State University. Joan earned advanced degrees from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She was an accomplished actor, director, musician and Educator. She relished playing her piano and creating wonderful social gatherings with family and friends. Joan taught at numerous institutions of higher education including the University of Wisconsin – River Falls (Rhetoric and Writing), St. Paul College of Art and Design (Theater), the University of Minnesota (Writing). She also spent many years in the Minneapolis Public Schools (High School English and Writing). She was a member of the Lawrence Durrell Society and presented her work at multiple national and international conferences (Avignon, France; Alexandria, Egypt; Corfu, Greece; Georgia, USA; Ottowa, Canada; Vancouver, Canada;). She was active in the Shoreview poetry group and local politics where she served for many years as a delegate for the Minnesota DFL. Joan was also an advocate for those less fortunate and volunteered at the local food bank. She donated hundreds of hours of time and her expertise in the humanities as an educational docent at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and to numerous theaters in the Twin Cities including the Guthrie and Park Square Theater.
Joan is survived by her two children, Jill (Victor) Pinkney Pastrana of Duluth, Jason (Rachel) of Ada, Ohio; five grandchildren, Daniel (Tabitha) Calderón of St. Paul, Pascal Pastrana of New York, New York, Lucas Pastrana of Milwaukee, WI, Annabel Pinkney of Columbus, OH, Noah Pinkney of Ada Ohio. She is awaiting the birth of her first great-grandson; brother, Vernon (Beverly) Maack of Alexandria, sister, Janice (Warren Helgeson) of Rothsay, brother, Robert (Janet) Maack of Rothsay, sister Judith (David Emery) Dumke-Emery of Rothsay, sister-in-law/aunt Ethel Maack of Fergus Falls, sister-in-law, Etta Maack of Breckenridge; numerous nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents John and Ida Maack, brothers Lyle Maack and Glen Maack, brother-in-law Richard Rudh, granddaughter Ava Pinkney
A Memorial Service will be held on October 9th at 2:00pm at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Fall. In honor of Joan's work with local food banks, in lieu of flowers we invite that donations be sent to the Union Gospel Mission in St. Paul.
