John Maertens

September 9, 1941 — November 20, 2021

Henning

John Edward Maertens, 80, passed away at home on November 20, 2021 after a lengthy bout with cancer.  He was born on September 9, 1941, in Marshall MN, the son of Henry and Sophie (Kaczerowski) Maertens.  He graduated from Wabasso High School in 1959 and immediately served a stint in the US Navy, much of that time aboard the USS Hancock Aircraft Carrier.

John and Jennifer (Alvord) were married in 1965 and raised their family in Brooklyn Center MN.  John had a career lasting 34 years with FMC (United Defense).  After retiring in 2001 John and Jenny moved to rural Henning where they built their retirement home.  He loved to fish, hunt and golf and would tackle anything that needed fixing.   Hands on, he built two houses and in retirement particularly enjoyed hunting his land, gardening, and sharing produce with friends.

He is survived by his wife Jenny; three children, Mark Maertens - Buckeye, AZ, Curtis (Jill) Maertens - Westminster CO and Theresa (Corey) Winkler - Minnetrista MN; grandchildren, Isabel Carroll, Amy and Jonathan Maertens; siblings Gerald (Shirley) Maertens - Bemidji MN, Barbara (Mark) Altermat - Lamberton MN, Joseph (Irene) Maertens - Fridley MN and Paul (Michelle) Maertens - Dent MN; and many other relatives and friends.  John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Sophie Maertens.
