John E. Pugh, age 76 of Battle Lake, MN formerly of Fargo, ND, passed away peacefully at Sanford Health, Fargo ND, on September 22, 2012, with his family by his side.
John was born July 26, 1936 in Milbank, SD, the son of Clem and Lizzie (Stoddard) Pugh. He graduated from Summit High School (SD) in 1954. Upon completing high school, John worked as a journeyman lineman for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad from 1954 – 1959.
He married Bev Anderson, the love of his life and best friend on July 12, 1958, in Milbank, SD. They were blessed with three daughters.
John served in the U.S. Army from 1959 – 1962. He finished the top of his class for the U.S. Army Ordnance Supply School at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Aberdeen, MD, where he received a certificate of achievement as a qualified missile instructor.
John worked for Associates Financial Service in Dickinson, ND, Montevideo, MN and Fargo from 1959 – 1970. John then joined Metropolitan Federal Bank in 1971 in the Wahpeton, ND branch, which led to a promotion as assistant and branch manager of the West Acres location in Fargo. He then moved to the corporate headquarters in downtown Fargo, where he retired in 1993, as Senior Vice President and Director of installment lending and past President of the ND Mobile Home Association.
Throughout his career, John attended ongoing education at the University of Connecticut School of Business Administration for Executive Development and the University of Central Florida for Financial Leadership Education.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing, sporting events, golf, bowling—anything related to the outdoors. Coaching fast pitch softball for nine years with his three daughters was a highlight of his life. He was President of Bruin Boosters at Fargo South High School, and he attended all sporting events relating to his daughters and grandchildren.
After retirement, John and Bev wintered in Lake Havasu, AZ and more recently, in Englewood, FL. During the summers, they made their home on Ottertail Lake, MN, enjoying many hours of boating and fishing on the water. They both had a passion for feeding the wildlife, especially blue jays, "Blacky" the squirrel and many chipmunks.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bev of Battle Lake, MN; daughters, Cindy Simmer of Fargo, Michelle Pugh (Brandy) of Chippewa Falls, WI and Lori (Dennis) Pugh-Erdle of Audubon, MN; grandchildren, Matt and Bobbi Simmer; Frank Simmer, father of the grandchildren; step-grandson, Max Erdle; brother, Norm (Marion) Pugh; and sisters, Iva Lowe and Maxine Owen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald & DeEll Pugh, and sister, Marjorie Amdahl.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Battle Lake, MN, with visitation one hour prior to services.
Visitation: 5 – 7 PM Tuesday, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Battle Lake
Interment: 2 PM Wednesday at Holy Cross South Catholic Cemetery, Fargo.
