John Smedsrud, 48 of Watkins died in his sleep after a lifelong battle with illnesses, Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Hilltop Care Center in Watkins, Minnesota.
John Allen Smedsrud was born on February 29, 1968, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota the son of Arvid Smedsrud and Portia (Harris) Wahl. He was baptized and confirmed in Bethel Lutheran Church of rural Battle Lake. John graduated from the Ashby High School in 1987, and then attended the Staples Technical School in the Diesel Mechanic program.
He lived in Beatrice, Nebraska for a few years before returning to Minnesota. In the Fergus Falls area he was employed with Interstate, Inc., Norcon and then was in carpet installation. As a young man he enjoyed visiting his aunt Verna, living on the farm, doing field work, milking cows, riding his dirt bike and listening to music.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Portia and Gary Wahl of Fergus Falls; two sisters, Angie Smedsrud of Milton, ND and Katherine (Dusty) Evenson of Fergus Falls; two brothers, Steve (Tracy) Smedsrud of Underwood and James Smedsrud of Fergus Falls; eight nieces and four nephews, Kellie, Charlie, Danielle, Jessie, Billy, Tabatha, Natasha, Samantha, Broc, Debora, Elizabeth and Gabriel; one great-niece, Ella Mae; aunt, Ruby Vogel of Battle Lake; uncle, Milton (Bea) Smedsrud of Ashby; and by numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Arvid Smedsrud; two aunts, Orva Buisman and Verna Braud; by two uncles, Ruben Braud and Bernard Vogel. He will be dearly missed by his loved ones.
