Joy Gaarsland, 68 of rural Battle Lake died Monday, June 22, 2015 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
Joy Ann Gaarsland was born on June 15, 1947, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota the daughter of Vernon and Goldena (LaValleur) Bowman. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church and graduated from the Ashby High School in 1965, then continued her education for two years at the Fergus Falls Junior College.
Joy and Dennis Gaarsland were married on August 14, 1971 in the Faith Haven Chapel of rural Battle Lake. One son, Justin was born on September 2, 1975. After their marriage, they lived by Ashby and Joy was employed a number of years with the Children's Home in Fergus Falls and also was proud to have been an EMT with the Ashby Ambulance Service. In 1998, Joy and Dennis moved to St. Cloud where she was employed at Hwy. 10 Travel Center, which is part of the St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce, working "Travel Minnesota" giving Minnesota information for tourism. In 2011, they retired to their home by Battle Lake. She enjoyed bingo, cooking, baking, being at the lake and family gatherings were very important to her. She liked all kids and Joy and Dennis were Godparents to many. She was the family historian and remembered friends and family birthdays, making sure she sent a card. Joy was a member of the Ashby Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis; son, Justin (Kimberly) Gaarsland of St. Cloud; granddaughter and three great-grandchildren, Tabitha (Dan Hauge) Lambrecht, Alexea, Khya and Jack of Princeton; two brothers, Bob (Naomi) Bowman of Ham Lake and Ron (Marsha) Bowman of Ashby; sister, Judy (Reid) Anderson of Evansville; and by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Goldena Bowman.
