Karen Basness

Karen Basness, 72, of Battle Lake, MN, died on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls.

Karen Kathleen Basness was born on November 7, 1948, in Blooming Prairie, MN, the daughter of Maurice and Gladys (Shaw) Basness. She was baptized and confirmed at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie. She graduated from Blooming Prairie High School and went on to earn a Degree from Waldorf College in Iowa.  She worked for over 20 years as a Financial Planner in Minneapolis, before moving to the Ottertail County area. Karen worked at Lake Country Gardens on Ottertail Lake where she met her future husband, Roger in April of 1997, Target in Fergus Falls for 8 years and most recently worked 15 years at Home Depot in Fergus Falls where she enjoyed working in the Appliance Department. On December 11, 2011 she married Roger Walvatne and had their reception on the family farm the following summer where they currently reside. Karen and Roger spent 24 years together.  Karen continued to work weekends during the busy season at Lake County Gardens.  Karen was known at work as a people person and always displayed the utmost in professionalism.

Karen loved pink flamingos, flowers and animals, especially her cats and dogs. She enjoyed watching the birds and spending time on the computer looking up recipes and ideas on Pinterest. Karen was a great cook and would use herbs to spice up her creations.

Karen is survived by her husband, Roger Walvatne of Battle Lake; sister, Barb (Steve) Nelson of Underwood, MN; brother, Scott (Sandy) Basness of Blooming Prairie along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Karen was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial Gathering: Friday, September 17, 2021, from 4:30- 7:30 P.M., at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls.
