Kathleen (Kay) Nielsen, 75, of Fergus Falls died Friday, January 7, 2011 at the Lakeland Hospice House.





Kathleen Joanne Nielsen was born March 7, 1935, in Marshall , MN the daughter and youngest child of John and Stella (LaVallie) Greenwood . She attended St. Joseph ’s Academy in Marshall as a youth and later graduated from Marshall High School . She married Gordon Francis Nielsen on August 23, 1952 in Austin , MN . They lived in Marshall until moving to Fergus Falls in 1955.





As a young woman Kay was employed as a waitress at the Atlantic Hotel in Marshall and later worked for several years at the Holiday Inn in Fergus Falls . She also worked many years as a sales associate for Montgomery Wards, Rick Farrar Photography and Clara B. Wright.





In her younger days Kay enjoyed league bowling and was an avid golfer and member of Pebble Lake Golf Club where she played Ladies League, won two Pot-O-Silver championships and experienced the rare feat of a hole-in-one. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, playing cards, especially bridge where she was an excellent partner, solving crossword puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren.





Kay is survived by her husband, Gordon; three sons, Dean of Fergus Falls, Bruce (Peggy) of Panama City, FL, and Paul (Susan) of Bastrop, TX; son-in-law Ron Fevig of Grand Forks, ND; brother, John of Anaheim, CA; sister, Eileen Delaney of Chatfield, MN; three grandchildren, Thomas Nielsen of Panama City, FL and Abby and Nora Fevig of Grand Forks, ND.





Kay was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Clarence Greenwood and Clara Belle Obler; son Brian; and daughter Beth Ann Feving.





In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Otter Tail County Humane Society or charity of the donor’s choice.
