Catherine Ione "Kay" Johnson was born in Minneapolis, MN on November 13, 1920 to John and Charlotte (Bisset) Busch. Her father's work as a chemical engineer took the family to International Falls and Colquitt, MN through her elementary school years. They returned to Minneapolis where she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938. Kay then worked for Benson Optical until 1941.
On September 6, 1941, she married Charles W. "Chuck" or "CW" Johnson. They raised their three children in Minneapolis and St. Louis Park, MN.
In 1966, Chuck's work took them to San Jose, CA. They enjoyed their years in California, with much travel both locally and internationally with CW's employer. In 1976 they moved back to Minneapolis to be closer to their grandchildren. After retiring in 1986, they moved to Fergus Falls to be even closer to family.
In 2004, Kay followed CW in moving to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls. They soon became active members of the Vet's Home community. She was always interested in getting to know the staff and their families. She loved all children and they felt the same about her. Kay enjoyed the volunteer group and caring for plants and flowers around the home. Her green thumb came from an early exposure to gardening at her uncle's nursery on the outskirts of Minneapolis. An avid knitter and seamstress in earlier years, she took to the many craft projects working with the rec. staff.
Up to the end of her life, she always had a smile and well wishes for everyone. Kay passed away February 24, 2012 on CW's birthday.
Preceding her in death were her parents, and her husband, Charles.
She is survived by daughters, Catherine Johnson of Minneapolis; Mary Ann (Rod) Swenson of Fergus Falls, and son, Brian (Cindy) Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Michael (Maribel Arcuino) Swenson, Erik (Holly Hinman) Swenson, Kristin (Ben) Shaw, Peter (Nora) Johnson, and Katrina Johnson; great-grandchildren, Freya Swenson, Louisa Swenson, and Conner Johnson.
